There's a coffee in my worm

So the other day Talia and I were out roaming the city in search of some organizational boxes for her sewing area, but unfortunately it was a Sunday, we forgot that things open late on Sundays, and we left ridiculously early. As a consequence we ended up wandering up Young street near Eglinton and going into a Starbucks for a Tazo Chai latte and a cookie.

While we were waiting for out drinks to be made I started thinking about the coffee grounds that they go through and I remembered hearing about using coffee grounds for worms. While I sat waiting I pulled out my phone and started browsing the internet (thank god for free wifi).

Apparently there are mixed reviews on coffee grounds and worms but I decided but I was still curious to try. It was early and the Starbucks was getting pretty busy so I didn't get a chance to ask what they do with their grounds but the thought stayed with me and after a couple of days I decided to go to the Starbucks by my apartment and ask them.

So tonight on our way home from work I convinced Talia to to go for another tea with me and lo and behold  I got my coffee grounds. When I first asked the server said sure and when she had finished dealing with the line up behind us she put some coffee grounds into a large coffee cup for me... This wasn't quite what I had in mind. Apparently there have been people in the past that come in regularly asking for coffee grounds to scrub with or something, I didn't quite understand but after asking if I could get more she finally understood and gave me a whole bag full of coffee grounds. Man was that ever heavy.

I added about half to my new worm bin and the other half to my old worm bin. I divided the bins in half earlier in the week (I think Sunday) in the hopes of harvesting some of the compost. After an almost screw up where I added too much onion to the new bin I decided to keep both bins around for a little while.

The think that I noticed was that the grounds at the bottom were sopping wet so I made sure to add plenty of shredded paper before adding the grounds. I will have to keep an eye on the bins for the next couple of days to make sure that they aren't too wet.

One thing that really surprised me was how warm the grounds were. Not so hot that I am worried about hurting the worms but none the less I made sure to sprinkle the grounds to cool them off a bit. We will see how the worms like it
